you need to have general biology knowledege so what i do is i read an AP Biology book or an SAT II biology book or any biology textbook.
Also, you need to practice conducting labs and time yourself while you're at it. And know how to use a bunch of equipment like triple beam balance.
and also stuff like indicators and what they mean when they react with a substance.

Does bio-process lab almost always end up being more of a big biology test?

it depends on your region. In mine, it usually is a big bio test at regionals, where it asks you to id parts of cells, however at states, there is more on interpreting charts and graphs, and experimentation.

Last year at regionals, it was very closely following the rules suggestions for topics-indicators, genetics, some measurement, and even basic ecology
however, at our state competition it was still the same concepts but simplified, so i thought it was backwards

Bio process does contain a large amount of ecology, so it is very smart to study up on biomes and ecosystems. They may not ask as specific questions, but at our states, we had to match temp. and rainfall graphs to different biomes. just because it has bio in its name does not make it solely related to biology. We even had to set up a small experiment and record data. The test will usually involve more practical application than theory i.e. it will ask you to calculate some things from a given or gathered set of Data. often, there will also be tool uses and id, which means that they will show you an florence flask, and ask you what it is, or have you set pipettes to the appropriate volume etc.
