Re: Covid-19 and Nats/States
Having personally rescheduled an invitational to six weeks later after an emergency cancellation, I can confirm that it was a very involved affair. I would assume rescheduling at a college site is much more difficult. If the situation wasn't expected to last so long* I could envision some earlier state tournaments rescheduling to later. I don't think rescheduling into the summer would become particularly complicated from a site point of view, at least not more than the (very large) difficulties of rescheduling on short notice in general.
* Whether or not the situation actually lasts for several months isn't the relevant point here - after all, we're two months out from the expected Nationals date. Expectation is what matters/mattered.

Nats is on a Sat, if there is a will there is a wayGiantpants wrote: ↑March 13th, 2020, 4:20 pmOkay, maybe an idealized one? Idk it was a general assumption that high level SO competitors are generally motivated and hard-working students, combined with personal experience regarding motivated and hard-working students. Sorry if it was incorrect at all!LIPX3 wrote: ↑March 13th, 2020, 4:10 pmIf you think most SO comptetitors are doing interships or resarch programs, I don't know what world you live in.Giantpants wrote: ↑March 13th, 2020, 3:40 pm snowyowl is right, the designation of a host site for these tournaments, especially like, nationals, happens years in advance, and when a cancellation ruling is made, its pretty much guaranteed to be final. Especially with the nature of SO as a school competition, something over the summer seems particularly unlikely, given how many competitors not only won't be in school, but will also probably be doing internships, research programs, jobs, etc, all things which would preclude them from participating in more tournaments over the summer.
Regardless, I think a lot of people would be unavailable over the summer due to prior commitments, whatever they may be lol

Throughout the outbreak, the national Science Olympiad organization has proactively provided guidance to state and tournament directors with recommendations to follow advice of health authorities and prioritize the "health and safety of all involved," sample statements for possible cancellation scenarios, and updates from the national level.
I've uploaded (with permission) correspondence from the national organization on February 28, March 5, and March 11 to the 2019-20 Coronavirus outbreak Wiki.

Just for my knowledge, what are bids you are referring too here --> "there was a significant amount of confusion on how bids would be allocated for tournaments with cancelled state tournaments"
How do Nats decide which state gets 1 or 2 state teams to Nats ?
