Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2020
I doubt ward will "sweep" NY
Columbia still beat ward at MIT, I'd say they are still slight favorites to win. But I think they are the obvious choices for 1 and 2
FM didn't look great and I want to say they might drop out top 3, but I have no doubt they will get better by states and likely get third. A national spot isn't impossible but unlikely.

Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2020
Hey all - Disease Supervisor checking in - just wanted to say thank you to all teams that competed!! I hope you all had a great time
Special shout out to TJ for winning Disease, and Boca Raton for the well-deserved overall win! It was great to see the enthusiasm during the awards and I hope to see you all next year.
On the topic of Disease, I just wanted to say that we made a few changes based off of feedback we received last year about the length of the exam. The exam was a tad shorter than what we have given in the past. However we did try to keep a good mix of easy and challenging questions. I'm pretty happy with the distribution of scores overall! I've linked a histogram with some basic statistics below. Feel free to email me or my co-event supervisor if you have any questions on the exam. There's definitely still some conceptual learning to be done for all teams

We did try to grade as consistently as possible, and I tried to go through most exams to double check. If there are errors, I apologize, but we tried. To all those who have emailed/messaged me after DUSO - super sorry I've been swamped with school work but I promise I will get back to you and send you my tests from previous years + this year. If others want access to those exams feel free to message/email me as well.
If you have any feedback on SOUP (Disease in particular!) please let me know. I definitely want to hear people's thoughts on what went well and what could be improved. Overall - great job everyone!

Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2020
Anyone else feel like it wasn't run as well this year in regards to some specific events?
Closing was great though.

Re: Science Olympiad at Penn Invitational 2020
My SOUP 2020 Summary/Review:
PPP (6) well, the venue was not ideal for this event as the effective ceiling height was low due to the rafters. Many teams got tiered not from hitting the ceiling, but from hitting a rafter on the way down. We had this issue on our first launch. The ESs were pretty chill. It was also good that there weren't major drafts or air currents. (7.5/10)
Wright Stuff (6) Again, the venue wasn't ideal but this was fine for WS and didn't have as much of an effect on the event than it did on ppp. There were a few teams that kept doing practice flights even when the ESs explicitly told them not to, which was kinda irritating. I noticed that some teams were getting caught in the basketball hoops and some of the window gratings on the side of the room. Otherwise it was fine, the ESs were nice and inspection went smoothly. The great thing about the room was that there were basically no drafts or air currents, which was great. (8.5/10)
Protein Modeling (2) Upon looking at the prebuild rubric, I felt that it could have been a little more detailed, especially in terms of topology and tertiary structure. For the computer exploration, some of the questions kinda required teams to have specific random knowledge that wasn't really pertinent to the topic for this year. Anyhow, the computer part of the test was interesting and a pretty good length. The actual test also seemed to be pretty good, although I mainly focused on the computer exploration. (8.5/10)
Sounds of Music (9) The pitch testing part was significantly harder for the bonus pitch, especially since it was run on nats rules. For the test, we felt like the questions weren't crazy hard and the test was a bit short, with most of it being MC. I think it could have benefitted from more FRQs and short answer questions. Looking at our test we got a lot of questions right but we still didn't place as well as we would have wanted to. (9/10)
Overall (23) As a whole, Penn was amazingly well run as usual. It definitely felt like there were a lot more highly competitive teams attended this year so the added challenge was really nice. The hiccups with grav were kinda sad but I can't personally attest to that. I also appreciated that the event buildings were kinda closer to each other this year, which made it easier to travel between events and stuff. One place where I think they could improve is to make the time between events 15 minutes instead of 10 minutes. This would give teams a bit more breathing room in case stuff goes wrong or events run late. I didn't really see any major issues with anything though. Thanks for a great invy this year and we hope to be back again! (9.5/10)
