When are y'all hosting more invitationals in Florida??

Theres like no invitationals in Florida. But the next one is December 15th at Orlando Science High School. Idk if sign-ups are closed or not but the last invitational only had like 15 teams so you should be able to sign up.

I feel like theres a chance that River City gets second but definitely not first. Orlando Science will surely win, their performance this year has been amazing. They beat Dodgen in the Dodgen invitational which was very surprising.

I feel like theres a chance that River City gets second but definitely not first. Orlando Science will surely win, their performance this year has been amazing. They beat Dodgen in the Dodgen invitational which was very surprising.

As much as I wish it to be so, we did not beat Dodgen. When Gold Flight ignored,we were tied. Them included, Dodgen were ahead of us. RCSA was not shabby either at Dodgen tournament. Considering you do better at building events, expecting a much improved Galaxy and ever present Archimedean, I am not THAT sure we can win first place in Division B

For Division C, I expect a second place for OSS. Not sure which giant will fall though.

Do you know for sure if Dodgen had stacked teams? Alot of schools do not stack until regionals and a teams performance at invitationals can be unrepresentative of a teams actual ability. I'm not going to attempt to make any predictions quite yet because I would like to at least have MIT results to base it on.

Do you know for sure if Dodgen had stacked teams? Alot of schools do not stack until regionals and a teams performance at invitationals can be unrepresentative of a teams actual ability. Dodgen and Piedmont were both unnaturally weak at the Dodgen invitational. We'll see how things go at Chattahoochee.

As much as I wish it to be so, we did not beat Dodgen. When Gold Flight ignored,we were tied. Them included, Dodgen were ahead of us. RCSA was not shabby either at Dodgen tournament. I would be very wary of placing so much faith in results from new, less-established invitationals. I dont think such results will necessarily reflect performance at states. Historically, events at the Florida State tournament are not the best-run, but I think this will be the first year where there will be a shift in both quality and difficulty of written exams as well as quality in engineering events. This will help increase the differentiation between teams in such a way that smaller invitationals and regional tournaments in florida typically do not. Solon is a very reputable tournament and will certainly serve as a good indicator of team performance, but I would not give similar value to results obtained from OSS and Dodgen invitationals based on their reputation and relative competitiveness of the teams in attendance comparatively.

On another note, it is nice to see so much discussion on the Florida forums, and I hope such discussions continue as the season progresses.

Also, I do agree with Kevin about certain invitationals not serving as a good indicator of performance. Some tournaments in Georgia from my experience were not well run. The test qualities were questionable and the keys seem to be incorrect for few events. However, OSS invitational's quality is increasing and hopefully increases to point where it may serve as a good indicator. As captains, we will make sure that the tests qualities are state to maybe national level for each events. However, when we ask other schools to write tests for certain events, then it becomes quite difficult to control the quality. I think this problem of not being able to write a "good " tests comes from Florida's lack of participation in scioly events such as SSSS. When moderating, it was pretty clear that I saw no submissions from Florida and it was quite sad. Participating in events like these tremendously help when writing tests as the moderators point out mistakes and give general comments on how to make a better or higher quality tests. Even as a moderator I learned so much from other moderators that helped to run the 2018 SSSS. Hopefully we will see increase in Florida's participation in events like these, but it may take long time.

I would argue that it is more to do with the fact that Florida itself is not that competive of state in scioly compeititons, really only Boca High has placed consistently high at nationals and the same two teams have qualfied for nats in the past few years. This creates less of a need for teams to use resources such as scioly.org or SSSS. Furthermore, it sets a standard within the state that directors and supervisor (not all) feel less necessity to run super high quality tournaments/inviationals or don't even have the expereince to know how to run a tournmanet at that level. I just think it is important to contexualize as a whole the science olympiad atmosphere in florida and understand that this affects other things such as user involvement here.
