There is a form on both soinc.org and the Food Science CD. I would strongly recommend using one or the other because some teams, like the one I coach, have been penalized this year for deviating from it. I believe an FAQ was posted to clarify that the forms may be modified, but you should stick to what is given in case you have an uninformed proctor.

Well, we would keep the entire form the same, but typed... Would that still be acceptable? I am asking because last time it took us forever to handwrite everything neatly, and we already have it typed up and weren't sure if we needed to handwrite it again
One more question: we found the following form on the Science Olympiad website:

but I bought the CD a while ago, and noticed that the form uploaded there looks very different (it is labeled 2016 experiment form...) Which one should we use?

I think you should use the one on the website. Also I do not believe it is required to be handwritten. Just don't forget pictures!

I can confirm that you may type it up. Like azurite said, remember the pictures, but include a data table in addition to them just to keep things neat.

Has anyone tried changing the amount of sugar used in the ice cream? My partner did it, and the results showed that using more sugar significantly increased the measurement of the tower, which is confusing me...because it doesn't sound right. Anyone?

My team suspects that the sugar helps crystallize the ice cream, but the vanilla should not help very much.

Is anyone else extremely frustrated that the food science nationals event supervisor practically stole our lab notebooks? How can we contact the board to have them return our materials? If it was stated in the rules, we could all get ready with backup, but it clearly does not say that the event supervisor will not return our own material.

I'll address the main issue first. As I said in another forum, ask your head coach to email the tournament directors to see if they could be mailed back. However, it may be futile to do so because word is that the rules committee changed back to baking, so you would have to do a different set of labs.

Now the other issue: please do not accuse the national supervisors of "theft." The General Rules permit anything to happen if it is safe but unspecified, so it is not really illegal in the SO world. More importantly, they can read your posts because they're publicly online. They can see your division, state, and possibly school if that is on your Wiki and may think poorly of your team thereafter because you are jumping to the most negative conclusion. I realize it could be a setback if you don't have copies, but there is no reason to throw your ES under the bus so hard.

My team keeps everything we can at the end of the season. That's not for us to use what we keep in the next year, but rather to be an example of good work. They may not be able to use the same notebook in the future, but a nationals example is a great tool for future years. Yes, there is a reason to retrieve the notebooks.
