Thanks very much. Sorry, I should have asked this too. Which teams are representing Michigan at the National Championships?

Re: Flight Times and/or Videos
Do you know what the other times were? I know the team that got 9th had a time of 2:08 so the top ten flights must have been really close.SO2016 wrote:The Michigan State WS 1st place was 2:42. The ceiling height is 21' 3.5'', length 151'11'', with 66'. The 2nd place was 1:50 with one dime bonus (= 2:45). Since the team flying without dime received more wing coloring bonus (162 x 0.1 = 16.2; the one flying with one dime received wing coloring bonus: 110 x 0.1 = 11), so they end up won the gold.

Re: Flight Times and/or Videos
kateak,
Here are the Michigan States scores per my watch and calculations. This is not official, but I witnessed all but two of the flights and got reports of those two flights from another coach that was present.
1st place: 2:41 watch time plus 16.1 seconds colored panel bonus = 177.2 seconds
2nd place: 1:50 watch time times 1.5 for one dime plus 11 seconds colored panel bonus = 176 seconds
3rd place: 1:23.5 watch time times 2.0 for two dimes plus 8.4 seconds colored panel bonus = 175.4 seconds
4th place: 2:38 watch time plus 15.8 seconds colored panel bonus = 173.8 seconds
5th place: 2:36 watch time plus 15.6 seconds colored panel bonus = 171.6 seconds
8th place: 2:15 watch time plus 13.5 seconds colored panel bonus = 148.5 seconds
Maybe someone that has the official times/scores could post.

On bonuses-
Generally, the bonuses are designed to add a challenge that usually reduces to overall flight times. This is needed most at nationals where most of the teams showing up are fairly good at the event.
The colored panels are also a challenge with the specific benefit to visibility for timers and photographers. In what sequence to apply the bonuses is always a matter of discussion and usually based on past experience. In both cases, the panels have done their job. With three timers, it is imperative to have good visuals by all three to get a fair flight times recorded. Considering that some state competitions do happen in higher sites (IN and IL for sure), those panels have worked quite well.
In addition, far more photos of Wright Stuff have been published in newspapers after the panels and coloring were introduced. Why is this important? Its just Marketing 101. The more people get exposed to Science Olympiad getting noteworthy, the easier is becomes to secure the resources it requires to run and grow a team.

Re: Flight Times and/or Videos
SO2016,
I heard that the winning team from Texas flew 1:52 with two dimes. I also heard that possibly all of the next 7 places flew with two dimes. I know that a team from New Mexico flew 2:45 without dimes for 8th place.
Hopefully, someone will be able to supply the additional details about the top 10.

This is incorrect. I don't want to step on Tom's thunder, so I'll hold off on providing any more details for now.bjt4888 wrote:SO2016,
