Probably something like a drip regulator for an IV bag. I would definitely ask about that, since it could be considered a commercial counter of a sort.

One more question: At impound, the rules say that the device must fit in a 80 cm cube. After impound, are we allowed to adjust to make it higher than 80 cm?

According to the national website, "The size restrictions in Rule 2.e.c. only apply at the time of impound, not during the actual competition."
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

I actually asked for a clarification about that. Check the national website, its there. You are allowed to have it exceed the 80 cm while running, but print out the clarification if the event supervisors think otherwise, because that happens often. I had to use the clarification several times already, including at regionals.

You should check with your local event supervisor. Clarifications and FAQ's are only necessarily followed at the National tournament. While your regional and state event supervisor may follow the clarifications and FAQ's, you should check with your local event supervisor to make sure.

it actually says in the rules that it has to fit ONLY at impound, but it's very ambiguous, so supervisors may get confused.

Lol at the state competition this weekend the proctors did not let the first two groups use their binders on the test and we would not have been able to if we had not shown them the rules.

Actually, once they had taken the binders from the first two blocks they should have taken yours, too. Of course, they never should have taken any in the first place, but at least then everybody would have been on the same footing.

I've just been placed on this event for the state competition.
I was thinking of possibly making an escapement pendulum to track the time.
I just wanted to ask anyone here that has also made an escapement clock to ask what they used for the actual escapement gear? Because I know we aren't allowed to use escapements that are commercially made for clocks, but then I'm not sure what I could use instead.

Any ideas?
