Poorly Run Event Stories

Woah..Experimental Design...IN STATIONS? That's smart, and a bit dumb at the same time...But a good challange! Though I wouldn't want to do Exp Design in stations, but I'd like to see others do it XD

It's not that bad if the test is put together well. I much prefer doing the full experiment. I think the reason they do it is so that they can test us on certain parts of the scientific method, and really figure out what we know and don't know. It's normally easier to....

Just thought of another story. My first year at regionals one of the stations on the Experimental Design test didn't really relate to Exp Des. Luckily it related to Road Scholars, which one of my partners had, so we were all good.

That sounds too much like Compute This a couple of years ago... Keep B division in B division, SO!

2012 Nationals Experimental Design National Event Supervisor planned a food based experiment including peanuts. One of our experimental design kids had a dangerous peanut allergy. She made him wait in the room.....

Was that C division? I was there, and the experiment we had involved soaking tiles in Coke.

I'd be interested in hearing any thoughts / recommendations your have. I didn't write the event, but was involved in providing feedback before it was posted. There's a reason we have pilot events around for a year or two - to work the bugs out. A lot of thought was put into coming up with an event that is more programming centric than compute this, while remaining within the general SO event constraints (limited time to compete, grade, needing to be objective, not subjective, etc).

The intent is NOT to focus on excel knowledge at all, rather on algorithm knowledge. Most functions competitors come up with should be able to work in Excel, OpenOffice, etc with minimal tweaks since they have to rely on just basic builtin functions generally common across most platforms.

Scrambler at regionals last year. Proctors were baked out of their minds and used a 2x4 as a terminal barrier, winning team won because their egg went over the barrier. Had to argue with them to allow my team measure the distance. It was posted at 9.7 m but we measured at 10 m and some change. Bungee was also a mess. Proctor said it was 2m drop height and our B team measured it around 4.5 m. Honestly, I have no idea how the college got a regional.

How is that different from Compute This, just without finding info? Knowing how to make an algorithm to complete some objective?

Really sounds cool. I feel like I would be better at this than Compute This. After all, that event was you either found the data or you didn't.

Compute This was probably the single event that I believed should have been in A division and not B. Anything meant to dumb it down should not be given to anyone in B/C. Period.
