Scioly Summer Project 2014

Post by zyzzyva980 »

Well, folks, it’s that time of year. The Scioly.org Summer Project is making its triumphant return after a disappointing first attempt last summer. What does this mean for you? It means that we are now accepting applications for positions in the 2014 Summer Project.

Questions? Let me answer them.

So what do I do? You fill out that application up there by March 31 and after that we’ll let you know if you’re accepted. That’s all you have to do for now. Couldn’t be easier, right? For a few more specifics- we’re primarily targeting high school students. That’s freshman and above this year- not next year. If you’re younger than that you can fill out an application if you want, but your odds of being chosen aren’t great.

What level of commitment does this require? It should only about an hour or so for each event you’re chosen for- for the entire summer. So if you’re chosen for three events, it shouldn’t take up more than three hours of your summer. And you get to decide when it’s gonna happen. You can spare three hours, can’t you?

Why so early? I know it’s only March, and we’re in the thick of the 2014 competition season. But the primary problem we faced last summer was a lack of time, so we’re getting started extra early. Instead of a month to work on your project, we’re giving those accepted to the project three months.

This means that the event list isn’t completely set. There are some events missing from the application. In rare cases that’s because we’ve already decided on the people for that event. In other cases it’s just because we don’t know what’s rotating in. We have a good idea, but we don’t know for sure. But we’ll come to that bridge when we cross it.

What exactly does this entail again? The exact project details, for now, remain a (loosely) guarded secret known only to those who get accepted. So get accepted and find out. I will say, however, that it involves helping out with events by sharing information of a similar caliber as that on the wiki, primarily targeted towards newer and less-experienced teams, to help them improve.

Should I do this? YES.

What role can YUSO play in this? Quite sure many of our members would be interested in helping out.

We'd love to have you guys apply. If there are people that are interested that aren't registered members on this site, then instead of putting their username on the first question, they can enter some other form of contact information (like an e-mail address) so I can get ahold of them if we accept them. (Or we could work out some way they could apply through you or something.) I'll send you a PM with some more details, YUSO.

There's only ten days left in the application period, and we haven't received very many applications. This means that if you apply for certain events that aren't as popular, and you appear to be somewhat competent, you're all but guaranteed to get a position. (Other, more popular events, such as Astro & and Anatomy, have had lots of people apply, so it's tougher to get one of those spots)

If you haven't yet, you should definitely apply. You've got a good chance of making it.

Still wondering what the project exactly is? Look at the application and use your deductive reasoning ;)
