We have broken a couple of gliders because the rubber band didn't fall off of the hook. Can anyone share a tip on hook shape?

How deep and tall is your hook? It should be just large enough to hold onto the loop, a tiny notch will likely be good enough for short ceilings.

Wrong event . That is for B div helicopters, and yes it makes a great difference to them but not for ELG.

Everyone has a favorite, but since this is new for this year, not many kit builders have generated kits and advertising yet.
From my emails with Freedom Flight Models, you should have a fairly competitive glider if you follow instructions closely. The kit is $49.00 + $8.00 shipping and has 4 gliders in it. It uses some foam and is a flapper model which some people say is not a good place to start. That said, build one and fly it until it breaks beyond repair and then build another one.
It will ship in about 2 weeks if there are no problems with his vendors.
I also bought a SO Lit'l Sweep that is a beautiful kit, but delicate. Stan says that it can be built and flown nicely by novices.
2 gliders and I think that it was $30 + 8 shipping.
I am starting our team out with cheapie kiddie gliders modified for the launcher. Much better to break these than expensive ones when starting.

Not a kit but REAL simple parts available at any hobby shop is the Simple Simon, plan at http://legacy.amaglider.com/assets/indo ... -plans.pdf It scales easily to SO size, don't increase wood thickness, personally I think the motor stick is oversize for width, and pay attention to density/weight and you'll have a very good starter glider. I've been using it in clinics and while talking/demoing I can get one built and flying in less than two hours. If you keep the weight down, it flies pretty good.

That is a very good starter glider.
We went one step further back and started with cheapie kiddie gliders to get the basics down. Simple Simon SO sized would be next and then you start going for reducing weight or go the kit route.

This has nothing to do what you guys are talking about, but why does ELG not get it's own subforum? I'm just wondering that because Helicopters for Div C had a subforum last year and B has one this year. Just wondering Thanks.
