Small states are people too...
They also have to start somewhere. By giving a nats spot to a small state they're increasing the likelyhood of other teams joining in from other schools.

ND lost their spot to AR. Last year, we (CO) got to send 2 last year since OR forfeited theirs, so we also lost one

Yea if you look at the teams going to nationals from last year, you will see another ND team right above the 2nd CO team at the very bottom.

I didn't think that ND had a large population of Science Olympians.

Numbers are reversed in order this year. Smallest state starting with #B1 and C1and working up. Not that it makes a difference, as everyone has the same conflicts this year.
Actually the state champions(B and C) from the state that is hosting the National Tournament are B1. Then the smallest states start upfrom B2 and C2.

Just a thought, Do you think that having team numbers higher on the numerical list might have a beneficial psychological effect on the competitors from the smaller states, whereby they can actually perform better? Discuss.
